Starswept – Mary Fan

Synopsis

Some melodies reach across the stars.

In 2157, the Adryil—an advanced race of telepathic humanoids—contacted Earth. A century later, 15-year-old violist Iris Lei considers herself lucky to attend Papilio, a prestigious performing arts school powered by their technology. Born penniless, Iris’s one shot at a better life is to attract an Adryil patron. But only the best get hired, and competition is fierce.

A sudden encounter with an Adryil boy upends her world. Iris longs to learn about him and his faraway realm, but after the authorities arrest him for trespassing, the only evidence she has of his existence is the mysterious alien device he slipped to her.

When she starts hearing his voice in her head, she wonders if her world of backstabbing artists and pressure for perfection is driving her insane. Then, she discovers that her visions of him are real—by way of telepathy—and soon finds herself lost in the kind of impossible love she depicts in her music.

But even as their bond deepens, Iris realizes that he’s hiding something from her—and it’s dangerous. Her quest for answers leads her past her sheltered world to a strange planet lightyears away, where she uncovers secrets about Earth’s alien allies that shatter everything she knows.

Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really liked the idea behind this story and it got more intriguing the more I read. Iris lives in the future where talented musicians are collected by an alien race called the Adryil. I really liked the story telling, it was a slow build up, but it was so worth it, also it gave the story and the characters lots of depth by not jumping straight into the action.

I loved how the characters were all unique and diverse. I thought relationship build up between Iris and Damiul was really sweet. Iris is your typical dreamer, I found myself relating to her a lot particularly when she would day dream about her life. I also liked how much she genuinely cared for the other people in her life.

I’m really hoping that Mary Fan is writing a second installment to this story because I really really want to know what happens next.  Also, I wanna take a second and show my appreciation for how bloody beautiful the cover is for this book! I mean seriously its stunning and I only have an e-book version, I can’t wait to see what the real version looks like.

The Bottom Line:

Read this book. I won’t disappoint, particularly if you like your YA mixed with a bit of alien romance. I would defiantly recommend this book.

My Rating:  4/5

My Review

This story picks up 2 years after Red Rising. Darrow is now working closely with Nero Au Augustus the ArchGovernor of Mars, all the while trying to bring down Gold Society.

This book really pulled me in more so than Red Rising! I finished this book Sunday evening and usually I like to write my reviews straight away while it’s all fresh, but this one, I just needed to digest and I mean that in a good way. This story is emotionally charged, action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat right to the end and what an ending that was! Holy shit I did not see that coming, I won’t say too much else about It but just be prepared to have your heart ripped out! Thanks for that Pierce Brown!

The world building in this story is breath taking. I love the idea that mankind is now living all over the solar system. The vast difference between how the Golds live and how the Reds and other low colors live is harsh.

I Iove Darrow! He is such a complex character, I like the way in which his character grew, but at the time I felt he was a little naïve when it came to what the people around him were feeling. I also really liked that he’s not perfect and he does make mistakes and these mistakes often have catastrophic consequences for him and the people he holds dear.

I also enjoyed the supporting characters, Sevro is particularly entertaining. Mustang I like her but I feel like I need to see more emotion from her. The bad guys in this book are like super villains, it’s been a while since I’ve read a book series where there are so many characters that are just plain evil arseholes. I mean seriously fucked up evil. We are also introduced to Ragnar Volarus, he offers his servitude to Darrow after Darrow takes over the ship is was enslaved on.

Conclusion

This was such a good read, and definitely, a must read if you have read Red Rising. I’m still so mad that it has taken me this long to get to reading this series because man have I been missing out!
