Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society’s mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.

Finally, the time has come.

But devotion to honor and hunger for vengeance run deep on both sides. Darrow and his comrades-in-arms face powerful enemies without scruple or mercy. Among them are some Darrow once considered friends. Review

One word: Perfection. That’s what this book was. Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. It took me just over a week to finish just because I wanted to saviour and because I was a little bit terrified about how it was going to end, but I shouldn’t haven’t worried because it was just brilliant.

I really enjoyed how this played out, the twists and turns and expectedness were fresh and exhilarating. I adore Darrow, he has fast become one of my favorite characters. The things that he has suffered makes my heart break for him. There were so many moments where I literally had my heart in my mouth. This story wrecked me emotionally seriously I can’t even tell you! There are moments towards the end where I swear my heart almost stopped!

“I cannot be afraid. I’ve spent too long being afraid. Too long being diminished by loss. Too long being everything except what I need to be. And whether I am the Reaper, or whether it’s just another mask, it’s one I must wear, not just for them, but for myself.”

At its core, this is a story is about courage, resilience, and transformation. Literal transformation for Darrow. He has overcome so much in such a short amount of time, he’s friends have become enemies and his enemies have become friends.

“He nodded, softly. “Thank you … brother.” And there, on a citadel landing platform in what was once the heart of Gold power, Cassius au Bellona and I shake hands and say farewell, almost six years to the day since we first met.”

Conclusion

I would recommend, no I do recommend this book, in fact, the whole series. If you are a fan of science fiction and you haven’t read this book I suggest you get on it stat! I promise you won’t regret it!

Also Iron Gold is out January 2018, I’ve already pre – ordered my copy and you can get yours here

My Review

This story picks up 2 years after Red Rising. Darrow is now working closely with Nero Au Augustus the ArchGovernor of Mars, all the while trying to bring down Gold Society.

This book really pulled me in more so than Red Rising! I finished this book Sunday evening and usually I like to write my reviews straight away while it’s all fresh, but this one, I just needed to digest and I mean that in a good way. This story is emotionally charged, action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat right to the end and what an ending that was! Holy shit I did not see that coming, I won’t say too much else about It but just be prepared to have your heart ripped out! Thanks for that Pierce Brown!

The world building in this story is breath taking. I love the idea that mankind is now living all over the solar system. The vast difference between how the Golds live and how the Reds and other low colors live is harsh.

I Iove Darrow! He is such a complex character, I like the way in which his character grew, but at the time I felt he was a little naïve when it came to what the people around him were feeling. I also really liked that he’s not perfect and he does make mistakes and these mistakes often have catastrophic consequences for him and the people he holds dear.

I also enjoyed the supporting characters, Sevro is particularly entertaining. Mustang I like her but I feel like I need to see more emotion from her. The bad guys in this book are like super villains, it’s been a while since I’ve read a book series where there are so many characters that are just plain evil arseholes. I mean seriously fucked up evil. We are also introduced to Ragnar Volarus, he offers his servitude to Darrow after Darrow takes over the ship is was enslaved on.

Conclusion

This was such a good read, and definitely, a must read if you have read Red Rising. I’m still so mad that it has taken me this long to get to reading this series because man have I been missing out!

Red Rising – Pierce Brown

Blurb:

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Thoughts

I am ashamed to admit it, but I have had this book on TBR list for over 2 years! I don’t really know why it’s taken me so long to get to it, but after reading it, I’m so mad it did.

Story/ Characters

I imagine that people will compare this to the Hunger Games, but personally, I think that’s a bit of an insult to this book because it was so much better. The storyline is better, the characters are better and the bad guys….. 100% more brutal! There are some scenes where I had to remind myself that this book is Young Adult because of the sheer ruthlessness and violence!

It’s told entirely in the first person from Darrow’s perspective. I loved that the setting of this book was Mars! I really enjoy books that are set in space and on other planets so this really appealed to me. The writing was exciting and captivating, and descriptions so rich that I had no problems imagining Darrow’s surroundings.

I don’t want to say too much about the details of the story because I don’t want to give anything away. What I will say is that you should prepare yourself. The catalyst behind this story is really sad and I didn’t expect it all. Some may find the beginning of this book slow going and if this is you, I urge you to preserve because the action doesn’t really start until chapter 13.

I really enjoyed Darrow’s journey. From the start of his transformation, I really felt his rage, anger, and sadness.

I thought Darrow’s determination was really admirable even when the situation seemed really dire he managed (with some help) to turn it around. I thought the way he actually learned from his mistakes when something didn’t work he would try something different, even when it wasn’t necessarily the done thing.

The only negative for me was that there is like almost no romance in this book, but I went in knowing that so it wasn’t too much of a shock to the system.

Conclusion:

This was a very enjoyable story and I will defiantly read Golden Son. I’m really intrigued to see what’s next for Darrow.
