The Lux Series (Books 1-3) – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Last week I started my re-read of the Lux Series. This time around I decided to read the version from Daemon’s POV: Oblivion. If like me you are a huge Daemon Black fan then this book is a must read!

I have the Kindle version which includes Obsidian, Onyx, and Opal. So I’ve only re-read the first 3 books so far, and to make things easier I’ve done mini reviews for each.

Book 1: Oblivion (LUX #1.5)

Blurb

I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.

And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.

But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can’t stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.

Falling for Katy—a human—won’t just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen…

I really enjoyed reading this story from Daemons perspective. You really get a greater understanding of why he behaves as he does when he first meets Katy. The banter between the two of them is pretty epic. I also liked all the bonus scenes in this book and the insight to what was happening to Daemon when Katy wasn’t around.

I thought the pace in which the relationship between him and Katy was really nice, it was just long enough that it kept me hooked. I also really enjoyed all the action in this story. Overall it was a really excellent read.

If you haven’t read Obsidian which is the original story told from Katy’s perspective then you should probably read that first.

My Rating:  5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Book 2: Onyx (Lux #2)

Blurb

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

The second book in the series focuses on the repercussions that Katy and Daemon must face now that she is mutated.

Things I liked were, Katy independence! She is determined to learn to defend herself so that she doesn’t have to rely on Daemon to protect her. Daemons determination to win Katy over and prove that his feelings for her are genuine and not just because they have a weird alien connection now. Also anytime they gave into their feelings and just had a full on make out sessions!

What I didn’t like, Blake!! God, he’s such an annoying slime ball of a character. Every scene he’s in makes my skin crawl! I admit Kat did frustrate me a bit in this book with her lack of trust in Daemon but with how he treated her in the first book I can see her point.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, I thought it was an excellent follow on from the first book

My Rating: 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The Power – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Blurb

With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.

Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve.  Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.

But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

Genre: Paranormal, New Adult
Characters: Josie, Seth, Deacon, Luke, Alex, Aiden etc

Story:

This book picks right up from where The Return finished. It’s also dual perspective. This book sees the return of Alex and Aiden (Yes!)  and we are also introduced to a couple of new characters; Hercules (Yes the Hercules!)  and a second Demigod Gable who is Poseidon’s son.

I really liked how this story played out, I thought that bringing Alex back in particular was a stroke of genius! I definitely recommend you read the Covenant series before you start this one as it will give you a full back story.

Characters

Seth’s struggle with his pull to aether takes up a large part of this story. He even goes as far as breaking things off with Josie because he feels he can’t control himself around her. The thing that I most like about Seth is that he still see’s himself as this big bad guy who deserves bad things to happen to him because of some mistakes he has made in his past, but then he does really selfless things and your like hang on a minute this guy isn’t as bad as he is making himself out to be and I think this is what makes him quite endearing.

Josie really grew in this story, I like what a badass she is starting to become! Particularly towards the end when she stood up to Alex and Aiden and defended Seth. I like that she sees passed Seth facade, in her words she see’s him as a whole person, not just his mistakes.

I would like to make a special mention for Hercules! He manages to irritate almost everyone apart from Deacon, at one point Seth refers him as “Herc-The-Dickface” 😆 and for me, these passages were a highlight of the story!

Conclusion:

Overall this was a really enjoyable installment and well worth the 6-month wait to read!  I cannot wait to read The Struggle! My Rating: 4/5

The Return (Titan #1) – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Blurb

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…

It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

Story:

Technically this is a re-read! but as its only, my second read I’m just gonna roll with. The first time I read this was last summer. I have chosen to re-read it now because the 3rd book is out next week! and because of this, I haven’t read the 2nd book either so I’m planning on reading that next in preparation!

Anyway back to this book. This book is a spin-off from the Covenant Series and is set after all the events that happen in this series. I wasn’t a huge Seth fan when I read that series so I was intrigued to see what this one was about.

This story is told in the first person and from both Seth and Josie’s point of view, the flow of the story is good I really liked the transition between the two characters dialogues.

I really liked the storyline and the chemistry between Seth and Josie is off the charts! I don’t know how she does it but Jennifer L. Armentrout always manages to create characters that are dripping with sex appeal and Seth is sex personified! I had no problems imagining his smoking hotness!

Characters:

Seth really grows in this book, I definitely had more empathy reading about him from his perspective and I can now say I’m a huge fan of his. I really hope he gets his happy ending.

I really liked Josie’s character, she is emotionally strong and takes everything in her stride. I also liked that she accepted all of Seth’s mistakes and saw passed them to the person he really is.

Conclusion:

It’s pretty obvious that I really liked this book, as it is a re-read and I’m planning on reading The Power next. My rating: 4/5

White Hot Kiss – The Dark Elements Series (Re-Read) – Jennifer L Armentrout

*This post contains spoilers!*

Blurb:

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Page Length: 388
Publication Year: 2014
Genre: Fantasy/Paranormal/Romance/Young Adult

Characters: Layla, Roth, Zayne, Stacey, Sam

I’m trying to remember exactly how many times I’ve read this book… it has got to be at least the 6th! To say that I love this series is an understatement, to say the least. I’ve read a lot of books by Jennifer L Armentrout and this my favorite, although I do adore the Lux series as well!

Anyway back to White Hot Kiss, Layla is part demon, the part warden who has been brought up by the Wardens to deny her demon side. Because of Layla’s duel heritage she has a couple of special abilities, 1, she can feed off the souls of humans if she kisses one, 2, she can see souls and from this determines how pure they are and 3, when she touches a demon it leaves a trace that the wardens can see, which helps them track the down said demons and send them back to hell. One evening whilst out tagging a demon she meets Roth! 😍

I really like Layla, I find her to be such a relatable character. Although she is not human she displays a lot of human like behavior which is one of the reasons I liked her so much. I also like her character progression and personal growth. in the beginning, she saw things from things from a narrower point of view, Demons bad, Wardens good. Which is largely due to how she was brought up and I liked seeing how she gradually learned that this is not the case.
