Monthly Round Up – May 2018

Jeez, how is it June on Friday?? This year seems to be flying by at an alarming rate. I am glad Summer is finally here though.  Anyway, let’s look back over May. This past month I’ve somehow read a whopping 16 Books! I know! I had a quick look back over the last few months and I usually read about 8/9 books so this is a bit of a record for me. The books I read where:

  1. A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas
  2. Arrogant Devil by R.S. Grey
  3. Olympian Challenger by Astrid Ardins
  4. Moonlight Seduction by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  5. Getting Down by Helena Hunting
  6. Boarded by Love by Aleo Toni
  7. Where I Found You by Heidi R. Kling
  8. Where The Sea Takes Me by Heidi R. Kling
  9. Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen
  10. Billionaires Claim: Redemption by Nadia Lee
  11. No Pants Required by Kim Karr
  12. Hooking Up by Helena Hunting
  13. Chasing Spring by R.S. Grey
  14. I Flipping Love You by Helena Hunting
  15. Man Candy by Melanie Harlow
  16. #Jerk by Kat T. Masen

It’s wayyy to hard for me to pick just one favorite book for this month because I just love so many of them! Also, I read a lot of romance, I’m going to try my best to mix up a bit next month, I have a couple of fantasy books that I’m hoping to sink my teeth into.

Beat the Backlist Update

If I’ve added it right, 4 of these counted to towards my Beat the Backlist challenge which brings my total to… 18!

📖 Currently Reading: Cinder by Marissa Meyer

That’s it for this month! May has been a fantastic reading month, I have read so many great books! Here’s hoping the rest of the summer is just as good!

About the Book

Orbit [eBook]-2Ciaan Gennett isn’t green, despite the brand of light hair that betrays her heritage: an Earth mother. A mother she remembers but doesn’t know, who left one day and never came back. Ciaan’s as metal as her home planet—cold and hard and full of so many cracks she’s trying to ignore that she doesn’t have time to wonder about questions that don’t get answers.

After one too many run-ins with the law, Ciaan finds herself sentenced to probation at a port facility and given an ultimatum: Prove that your potential is worth believing in. With help from her best friend Tidoris, Ciaan stays away from trouble—and trouble stays away from her. But when a routine refueling turns into a revelation, Ciaan and Tidoris find themselves forced into an alliance with an Earth captain of questionable morality and his stoic, artificially-grown first officer. Their escalating resistance against bureaucratic cover-ups begins unraveling a history of human monstrosity and an ugly truth that Ciaan isn’t so sure she wants to discover.

Now they all must decide how far they are willing to dig into humanity’s dark desperation—and what they are willing to do about what digs back.

Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Worlds I’d Never Want to Live In

“Top Ten Tuesday, this was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010. It’s now moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together”

Welcome to another Top Ten Tuesday! This week’s theme is Bookish Worlds I’d Never want to Live in.

In all honesty, this list didn’ take that long to compile:

  1. Twilight – Glittery Vamps.. yeah no thanks
  2. Hunger Games – Lots of death so not loving that
  3. Throne of Glass – It just seems like a tough place to live, now if I could live there with a certain fae prince I could be persuaded…
  4. Red Queen – urgh annoying people who are stupid – Hard Pass
  5. Shatter Me – Tyrannical Leaders are so not my thing
  6. First Life – So much drama….
  7. Alice in Zombieland – a world where zombies exist would be my idea of hell
  8. Divergent – again really annoying people
  9. Mortal Instruments – just no
  10. Everless – I’m rubbish with money so I wouldn’t survive very long 😬

That’s it for this week.

Until Next time 🤓✌🏼

[Book Review] I Flipping Love You – Helena Hunting

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting comes I Flipping Love You, a love story about flipping houses, taking risks, and landing that special someone who’s move-in ready.

Rian Sutter doesn’t usually get hit on in the grocery store, but when she notices a sexy man in a suit checking her out, she thinks maybe it’s her lucky day. Either that or the suit has a thing for sweaty, yoga-pant wearing women with excellent price matching skills.

Turns out it’s neither.

Pierce Whitfield can’t believe his luck when he’s able to track down the woman who scratched up the paint job on his car at the scene of the crime. But when he confronts the hit and run hottie, he discovers there’s not just one, but two of them, and he’s been throwing accusations at the wrong twin.

As repair costs are negotiated, and the chemistry between them flares, Rian and Pierce find out they have more than mutual attraction in common. They’re both vying for the same pieces of prime real estate in The Hamptons and neither one plans to give up without a fight.

Can these passionate rivals turn up the heat on their budding romance—without burning down the house?

Review

*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

This book is set in the same world as Hooking up and Shacking up, Pierce is Amalie’s brother so if you have read Hooking Up you would have met his character briefly there.

I flipping love this story! Just like the first 2 books this story it’s filled with lots of laugh out loud moments and lots and lots of sexy times, it’s everything I have come to expect from Helena Hunting. Rian and her sister Marley flip house’s for a living, in the hopes of one day making enough cash to buy their own home on the beach but then Pierce happens, bringing a competition that they had not planned for. What also doesn’t help is the undeniable attraction between him and Rian….. This quiet little beach town just got more interesting.

Firstly,  The Hamptons sounds freaking amazing, it really made me want to visit!  I really liked Rian, she is feisty, headstrong and very endearing. The chemistry between her and Pierce is sizzling from the get-go. I loved how they met – arguing over who scratched his car in the middle of a supermarket! It was just hilarious. Talking of Pierce is was great too, I liked how he was all in with Rian and didn’t run when she told him all about her past, also he is very swoony!

Another character I have to mention here is Marley, she is Rian’s twin sister. Marley is more of a party girl than Rian but she seems like so much fun! I know there are going to be a few more books set in this world and I really hope one of them is Marley’s story.

Overall this was soo so good! If you are going on vacation soon this is a perfect some summer read, in fact just grab a copy anyway, you will not be disappointed.

[Book Review] Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen

Synopsis

You’d think a billion dollars, a professional hockey team and a six-bedroom mansion on the Promenade would satisfy a guy. You’d be wrong.

For seven years Rebecca has brightened my office with her wit and her smile. She manages both my hockey team and my sanity. I don’t know when I started waking in the night, craving her. All I know is that one whiff of her perfume ruins my concentration. And her laugh makes me hard.

When Rebecca gets hurt, I step in to help. It’s what friends do. But what friends don’t do is rip off each others’ clothes for a single, wild night together.

Now she’s avoiding me. She says we’re too different, and it can never happen again. So why can’t we keep our hands off each other?

Review

I’m so happy that I finally got around to reading this book, I’ve had it on on my TBR before it was even released.

Nate and Rebecca have been working together for 7 years, Nate doesn’t know when he started seeing her as more than a friend but what he does know is that it’s becoming harder and harder to stay away from her. Then one night in a hotel room changes anything.

This story was so refreshing from the usual billionaire stories that I have come across, I think this was because the characters just felt so normal and relatable, it made connecting with them really easy.

I need to take a moment to show my appreciation for how brilliantly written Nate’s character is. In other millionaire/billionaire books, I’ve read the male leads are normally egotistical, arrogant controlling jerks but Nate is the total opposite, he’s down to earth, funny and geeky and for me, those are much more attractive traits. Also, he is so caring towards Rebecca and doesn’t play any games, he is honest about what he is feeling all the time. I just love him!

Rebecca is great too, I could totally understand her anxieties about dating Nate as he is her boss. She was a little insecure at times but not in an annoying whiny way. I think some of her fears were justified.

Overall this was a fab little read, one I’ll no doubt re-read because I enjoyed it so damn much!

[Book Review] Where I Found You – Heidi R. Kling

Synopsis

After her mother’s plane went missing over the Indian Ocean, seventeen-year-old Sienna Jones gave up everything she loved about living in California. No more surfing. No more swimming. No more ocean, period. Playing it safe, hiding from the world, is the best call.

Until her dad throws down the challenge of a lifetime: spend the summer with his humanitarian team in Indonesia, working with orphans who lost everything in a massive tsunami.

The day they arrive, Sienna meets a mysterious boy named Deni, whose dark, intense eyes make her heart race. Their stolen nights force her to open up and live in a way she thought she couldn’t anymore. When she’s with Deni, she remembers the girl she used to be… and starts to feel like the woman he sees in her.

A woman he wants for his own.

Gulp.

But when Deni’s past comes looking for him, Sienna’s faced with losing another person she loves. She can’t do it. Not again.

Fortunately, this time, she has a plan.

Review

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

One of the great things about blogging is that it has pushed to me read books that I wouldn’t normally and this book falls into that category. The story being set in a place where a natural disaster has happened probably wouldn’t really have sparked my interest  at all but then I signed up to do a blog tour for the second book (mainly because the cover caught my attention) and so I got sent the first book to read first and boy am I hooked! It was surprisingly addictive reading in the best way.

Ever since her Moms plane went missing over the Indian Ocean, Sienna has pretty much given up on life and doing the things she loves. Then her Dad throws down the gauntlet and asks her to spend summer in Indonesia volunteering at an orphanage where children have lost everything in a Tsunami. It’s there that she meets Deni, they bond over their shared losses but when his past comes calling Sienna knows she can’t lose another person in her life.

Firstly the Tsunami in the story is based around the real Boxing Day Tsunami that happened in 2004. Which I remember fairly well, the news coverage was extensive so I didn’t really need to use too much of my imagination when came to picturing the devastation. Deni’s story is probably one of many but still so heartbreaking.

I really liked both Sienna and Deni. Sienna is still very much grieving the loss of her mother and that really comes through when she doesn’t want to share her feelings and also with her anger towards her Dad when he appears to be moving on. The relationship between Deni and Sienna was very sweet and full angst but in a good way.

The ending of the story was bittersweet and Sienna makes a really grown up decision which I was very impressed with. I love this book, which was a real bonus because I wasn’t really expecting much going in. Anyway, I’m off to finish the second book because I need to know how this all ends!

My Rating 4/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟

[Book Review] Boarded by Love – Toni Aleo

Synopsis

“Jude Sinclair here, hockey player for the Bellevue Bullies and lover of all ladies. Hockey’s in my blood, and not to sound full of myself, but

I’m good at it…really good. The draft is within my reach—it’s mine to take—but that’s not the only reason people know my name. They know me because of my way with women. They know the score, and I aim to please. I just tend to stay away from repeat performances. In other words, I don’t do relationships beyond my family and friends. I’m happy with life. However, I should warn you that my story and how I see it playing out is about to change due to a certain redhead on campus.

She’s beautiful. Stunning. Breathtaking.

She’s my game changer.”

“He’s trouble from the moment I see him. I don’t know what I’m thinking, but from the moment I meet his gaze, I’m his. It’s a scary feeling.

I’ve never trusted anyone outside my aunt and uncle—and even that took months. I didn’t have it easy growing up. My mom was usually strung out, and she didn’t give me a second thought. Drugs and the men who paid her were more important to her. It was horrible, but I’m stronger today. Because of my past, security is what I need most. Money assures me that I can take care of myself today, tomorrow, and next month. I don’t want to ever be hungry or go without again, so I work hard for every penny.

Oh, by the way, I’m Claire Anderson. I’m a hard-studying sophomore at the University of Bellevue, dancer for the school dance team, and a burlesque dancer at a club, but that’s my secret.
You may think you know how our story ends, but you have no clue. It’s not easy falling in love… or living happily ever after. At first it may seem so, but when is anything worth having ever won without a fight?

Especially when you’re boarded by love.”

Review

In general I like Hockey themed storys but this one almost broke my eyes from the amoutn of eye rolling that went down whilest I was reading this book.

Claire is whiney and irritating! I felt no connection to her, she keeps secres from the people she loves for reasons that make little or no senese. Jude was ok but kind meh, no real personality and he was pretty boring to be honest,. The worst thing about this book thought was the major major insta love! I loves you were being thrown around after only 2 weeks of them meeting. I probably should have stopped reading at that point but I I held out hope that things my get better –  they did not.

I never thought a romance book could have too much romance but this book did it, mainly due to the utter repetiveness, there’s only so much you read about much people love it each before you it becomes ewww. I get they love it each other I don’t need to be kept remineded about that fact. I started skim reading towards the end because it became so unbareable.

I probably will try another book by Toni Aleo just incase this was a blip but I really wish I’d DNF’d this book.
