Monthly Round-Up – April 2018

How is it the end of April already? It only felt like yesterday that I was writing last months post. I guess time really does fly when you are having fun!

I was kinda worried that my reading count was going to be low this month as I didn’t do any reading for 2 weeks whilst I was on holiday but I did actually manage to read 8 books, god knows how I’ve managed to do that but hey I’m not complaining! These books were:

  1. Brave Enough – Kati Gardner
  2. Bad Boy Brody – Tijan
  3. The Billionaires Claim: Obsession – Nadia Lee
  4. Everless – Sara Holland
  5. The Allure of Julian Lefray – R.S Grey
  6. Furyborn – Claire Legend
  7. Absinth of the Heart – Monica James
  8. See Through Heart – Amie Knight

Favorite read of the month was definitely Everless. You can find my review here for all my thoughts on this books.

Beat the Backlist Update

This month I only managed 1 books for this challenge, I would love to count The Allure of Julian Lefray but this was a re-read so 🤷🏻‍♀️ anyway this brings my total to 11.

📖 Currently Reading: Chasing Spring by R.S. Grey.

📆 Pre-orders for May:

I’m so excited for all these books! May looks like its going to be an epic reading month! Tha’s all for now.

Happy Reading ✌🏼

[Book Review] Everless by Sarah Holland

Synopsis

Time is a prison. She is the key. Packed with danger, temptation and desire – a perfect read for fans of The Red Queen.

In the land of Sempera, the rich control everything – even time. Ever since the age of alchemy and sorcery, hours, days and years have been extracted from blood and bound to iron coins. The rich live for centuries; the poor bleed themselves dry.

Jules and her father are behind on their rent and low on hours. To stop him from draining himself to clear their debts, Jules takes a job at Everless, the grand estate of the cruel Gerling family.

There, Jules encounters danger and temptation in the guise of the Gerling heir, Roan, who is soon to be married. But the web of secrets at Everless stretches beyond her desire, and the truths Jules must uncover will change her life for ever … and possibly the future of time itself.

Review

In Sempera time is currency, wait no that’s an oversimplification, blood is time and time is the currency that is made of blood. Jules and her dad are behind on resnt so Jules is preparing herself to make a blood payment, but her father won’t let her do this and so to stop him from bleeding himself dry Jules takes a job at Everless, the home of the Gurling family the same place that Jules and her dad had to flee when she was a child. When Jules arrives at Everless old secrets and who she really is, starts to come out.

Everless is one of those books that I kept hearing about and didn’t really pay much attention to until I took the time to find out what it was all about, it did pique my interest but I just added it to my tbr and moved on, until a couple of weeks ago when I saw it on offer and thought eh why not?

I’m really glad I took a chance on this book because it was it was totally amazing! I loved how intricate the storytelling was, it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It was so addictive I pretty much finished this book in a day.

I loved Jules, her character is awesome, I thought she was very well written and I enjoyed her journey in discovering all the secrets about herself. Other significant characters in this story were Roan and Liam, who are brothers who Jules grew up with whilst at Everless. Throughout the story Roan is the love interest and whilst he is somewhat dream I found him to kinda bland and boring. Liam is supposed to be the bad brother who is mean and should be feared but I found myself liking him a lot more which I have no reason for except that I just felt like there was more to him than what Jules was seeing.

Anyway the ending… MY.GOD. I just …. I can’t wait for the book it was seriously painful that the story ended the way it did, now I have to wait months for Evermore to come out to find out what happens next!

[Book Review] Bad Boy Brody

Synopsis

One punch took him from Hollywood’s Golden Boy to Bad Boy Brody.

The media didn’t care he was grieving his brother’s death. They descended on him, but to change his reputation, his manager got him a deal.
Act in an indie film, one that already had Oscar buzz, and he’d get the movie roles he needed to secure his future.

He took the deal.

Yet he wasn’t prepared for the real-life people behind the script.
He wasn’t prepared for the murder the movie was based on.
And he really wasn’t prepared for her, the biggest secret of all.

She was wild. She was beautiful. She defied gravity.

But was she the leading role that would tame

Review

*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Brody has become Hollywood’s latest bad boy, the death of his brother has sent in him into a downward spiral and to make sure he gets a part in the next blockbuster his agent has got him a part in a small indie movie. When Brody gets to location things don’t go smoothly, secrets are in abundance and the biggest, a mysterious woman who is running free with a herd of wild horses.

hmmm… I had a bit of a hard time with this one and it’s not because the story was bad or anything like that, I just wasn’t feeling. There are two reasons why one I just didn’t connect to the 2 main characters and two the story didn’t really capture me in the way that I was hoping.

I don’t really want to give this book a bad review because it really wasn’t a bad book it just wasn’t for me, in general, I love Tijan’s books and her writing as always was brilliant which is why I’m so loath to be writing anything too negative. It really was more of a personal preference in terms of what the story was about and so I’m going to finish this review here.

Excerpt
I lose the track of my friends’ conversation as the fine
hair at my nape bristles — not unpleasantly — and my gaze lands on the sole
bartender on the other side of the counter.
Everything fades away except him.
I’ve met handsome men, hot men, aristocratic men, charming
men on both sides of the Atlantic. My family alone has four brothers and four
cousins who make women stupid with their looks. Having grown up around such
male beauty, I’ve always considered myself immune — able to appreciate it
without turning into some kind of infatuated drooler.
But the bartender…
Everything about him is absurd.
The absurd perfection of his bone structure. The absurd blue
of his eyes. The absurd firmness of his lips. The absurd muscularity of his
big, strong body.
When our gazes collide, I feel like every cell in my body is
waking up after a lifetime of slumber. My heart beats a little bit faster, a
little bit harder. Blood flows a little quicker, a little hotter.
Is this sexual attraction?
I shake my head inwardly. I’ve felt attraction to guys
before. But nothing like this. This man shines like a brilliant gemstone, like
the heavens opened up and a halo appeared around him.
Then I remember what Grandpa used to say.
“When I first met your grandmother, I knew she was the
one.”
“How?” I asked. An exceptional artist, Grandpa has
a propensity for exaggeration and dramatic flair.
“Because she made me forget where I was. Every time I
laid eyes on her, nothing else mattered. Colors were brighter, food tasted
better, and the air felt cleaner. All because I met her.”
I laughed. “That’s just infatuation, Grandpa.”
He shook his head. “No, no, my little angel. It’s
called love. My soul recognized hers.”
I tried not to laugh at such a ridiculous story. On the
other hand, Grandpa’s first marriage lasted until the death of his wife in a
sailing accident. And by all accounts, they adored each other.
Suddenly Vanessa taps my elbow. “Earth to Elizabeth.
Come on.” She tilts her shiny red head toward the bar. “We’re sitting
at the counter.”
Apparently the decision has been made. “Okay.” I
park my butt across from the bartender, Grandpa’s words about soul mates
circling in my head.
Because if this bartender’s mine, he’s popped up at the most
inconvenient time and the most inconvenient location.

Review

*I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

At 17 Elizabeth mets Dominic in a bar after using a fake ID. Later that night she ends up at Dominic’s place where she loses her virginity to him. They fall for each other hard and fast and then it all comes tumbling down. 10 Years later all Dominic has on his mind is revenge and all Elizabeth wants is forgiveness.

Not sure where to begin really, I liked this storey but at the same time I didnt really care for it. I liked the storyline but I think it was some of the characters behaviours that gratted my nerves a bit.

Dominc is a tad childish and overall a very confused person especially when it comes to Elizabeth, I mean I kinda get where hes coming from most of the time but I didn’t get how we could have been so blind to what was really going with Elizabeth.

I found myself sympathising with Elizabeth more than Dominic. She is a deeply unhappy person that has been manipulated by her family for most of her life. I just really felt she deserved more.

The story itself was ok I would like to have gotten more answers than I did but I guess more will be revealed in book 2, which I will definitely read because I need answers! Also, I’m really rooting for Elizabeth to get her happy ending!

Review

*I recieved an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

Carson has big dreams of becoming a famous ballerina, her whole life is dance, but a secret injury turns out to be something much worse and shatters everything. Davis is a cancer survivor and a recovering addict who is battling to stay sober. The big question? Are Carson and Davis brave enough to overcome the tough battles they are facing…

I really enjoyed this story, it covers two emotive topics cancer and addiction. As a YA novel, I thought it was really well done. I particularly liked how even though Carson and Davis are linked, each of their stories is separate and what they have to overcome is different.

I liked how even though there is some attraction and a little romance between Carson and Davis, it’s written in a way that it doesn’t overshadow the main theme of the story, there’s no insta love falsity to it, it just flows nicely in the background. I have to say that given how heavy the subject of this book is I didn’t feel depressed or come away feeling sad whilst reading it, it’s hard to put it in words but I just felt so in awe of how brave these characters are.

I don’t normally mention author notes but I found the one at the end of this book incredibly touching and it made this book a bit more special:

“When I was a teenager and reading every book I could get my hands on, I was desperate for a girl that looked like me. For a girl who had cancer and lived. And it was really hard to come by. So, I wrote one.”

It’s where her parents work, where Nikki grew up . . . and where she got her heart broken by Gabriel de Vincent himself. Yet here she is, filling in for her sick mother. [COVER REVEAL] Arrogant Devil by R.S. Grey

Are you ready for ARROGANT DEVIL? We are so excited to reveal the cover of this next release from R.S. Grey! Check it out below!

About ARROGANT DEVIL (available May 10th)

Everyone in Cedar Creek, Texas, knows Jack McNight is an arrogant devil. Physically, I get it: he’s tan and fit, with coal-black hair that’s clearly been scorched by hellfire. Oh, and his personality? It burns just as hot.

When I show up on the doorstep of Blue Stone Ranch, I’m run-down and rockin’ my last pair of underwear. I’m hoping for a savior, but instead, I find him.

My opinion of Jack is marred by a dismal first impression, but his opinion of me is tainted even before I arrive. He’s heard I’m a spoiled princess there to take advantage of his goodwill. To him, I’m more trouble than I’m worth.

Our button-pushing banter should get under my skin. His arrogance should be a major turn-off. Problem is, devils are known to offer their own form of temptation.

Every one of his steely glares sends a shiver down my spine.

Every steamy encounter leaves me reeling.

Sure, it could be the Texas heat messing with my head, but there’s no way I’ll survive the summer without silencing him with a kiss and wrestling him out of those Wranglers.

Who knows…going to bed with the devil might just be the salvation I’ve been looking for all along.
