Other Pursuits (#2) July 2017

July has been a fairly quiet month for me. I’ve worked the whole of it so it’s not been that exciting at all.

TV SHOWS

Game of Thrones

My name is Tracey and I’m a Game of Thrones addict! I started watching GoT last year. I and my hubby binged watched the first 5 seasons over a couple of weeks so that we could catch up to season 6 and thus my addiction began! The year long wait for season 7 has been painful! So, when July 17th rolled around I was super excited and the opening episode did not disappoint!  Best opening episode ever!

I’m sure I’ll have more to say next month at the end of August because it will be near enough finished again by then (BOOO!)

Grey’s Anatomy Re-Watch

Because summer tends to be slow on the TV front and because I haven’t found anything else to get into yet, I started re-watching Grey’s Anatomy from the beginning! This is the second time I’ve done this but the first time in like 2-3 years if that makes sense?

Anyway, I’m halfway through season 2 at the moment. The thing I love about re-watching a TV show is that you notice different things, for me this time its how bloody annoying and self-righteous Burke is, I mean I noticed the arrogance before but for some reason if feels more pronounced.

Movies-2

John Wick 2

I love the first John Wick film, but this one kind a lacked something – I think it might have been the case where I set my expectations really high and the film just didn’t meet them. It wasn’t all bad and Keanu Reeves was once again excellent. I’ve loved him since I watched him The Matrix back in 1999.

Secret life of pets

I don’t have a lot to say about this one, except that they showed all the good parts in the trailers, the actual movie itself wasn’t that great.

Bridget Jone’s Baby

Ok, so I’m not a Bridget Jones fan…. She actually annoys the ever loving crap out of me. The main reason I watched this was because Patrick Dempsy is in it (McDreamy) so it’s not really that much of a shock to me that I didn’t enjoy it.

Moana

I really enjoyed this, in that I enjoyed the animation. It was just beautiful! The vast vivid colors and the rendering of the ocean was just phenomenal! Also, the Rock as Maui was genius! He was so so funny.

Other things-2

I’ve really not done much else. Mostly just blogging and spending time in the garden with my two favorites, my husband, and my cat:

I think that’s it.

Until next time 🤓

You’re Not Good Enough Book Tag

It’s Sunday, which has kinda become my unofficial tag day! I was tagged in this one by Bella from Bella Blogs Because Books. This is one I’ve not come across before but it was super fun to do.

This tag works by writing down 30 character’s names on pieces of paper and putting them into a bowl and pick out two at a time at random. Then choose which character fits the question best.

You only have one more spot on your spelling bee team, who would you choose to complete your team?

Amani from Rebel of the Sands and Mustang from Red Rising Trilogy

Ah ok so from what I remember Amani is a doer and goes after what she wants but I’m struggling with what her intelligence was like? But I do know that Mustang’s education was excellent so I’m going to go with her.

Final Answer: Mustang

Both these characters want to kill you, which character would you kill first so you have a better chance of surviving?

Seth from The Return and Harry from Harry Potter

Oh, gods, I have no doubt that Seth would definitely kill me on the first try, whereas Harry is more likely to need a couple of attempts. So yeah Seth.

Final answer: Seth

You are on the bachelor or bachelorette and these are the last two people, who are you giving your final rose to?

Cassian from A Court of Thrones and Roses Series and Mia from The Princess Diaries

Seriously no contest here. I like Mia but Cass would be getting that rose!

Final answer: Cassian

You have been chosen for the hunger games, which of these characters are most likely to volunteer to take your place?

Callypso from Rhapsodic and Jin Rebel of the Sands

I would have to go with Callypso, she is very selfless where as Jin is not so much.

Final answer: Callypso

You are stranded on an island, which character would you sacrifice to cannibalism?

Josie from The Return and Karou  from Daughter of Smoke and Bone

As Karou is a pro at working with body parts, I’d have to sacrifice Josie `

Final answer: Josie

You are the next DC or Marvel superhero, which of these characters would you want as your sidekick?

Ren from Wicked and Darrow from Red Rising Trilogy

I really like Ren, but I think Darrow would be a more of a kick ass sidekick, I’m halfway through Golden Sun and there is a fight scene between him and another character and its just epic!

Final answer: Darrow

You’re a manager of an avocado admiring company, which character would you fire for lack of communication skills?

Cameron Hamilton from Wait For You and Rowan Whitethorn from  Throne of Glass Series

Hmm, Cam doesn’t really have communication issues. However, I would say that Rowan is not particularly a people person… so yeah Rowan.

Final answer: Rowan

You’ve just finished a book in which your favorite character dies, which character would most likely comfort you?

Akiva from Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Jess from When Lightning Strikes

Jess is a very ballsy character and not what I would call soft, where as Akiva has suffered a lot of loss so would be able to empathize with you.

Final answer: Akiva

It is high school, which of these characters would most likely be part of the popular clique?

Katy from the Lux Series and Aelin from Throne of Glass

Without a doubt Aelin, mainly because everyone would be terrified of her!

Final answer: Aelin

It’s your birthday, which character would have the nerve to forget?

Azriel from A Court of Thrones and Roses Series and Desmond Flynn from Rhapsodic

Azriel wouldn’t do this, he doesn’t strike me as someone who would forget anything. Where as Des probably would and then make a huge gesture to make up for it.

Final answer: Desmond Flynn

You’ve just found an upcoming booktube star, which character would it most likely be?

Cole from Alice in Zombieland and Feyre from A Court of Thrones and Roses Series

Hmm, this is a difficult one. I think Cole? I can’t see Feyre A) wanting to be on Camera and B) having the time. Where as Cole is a little arrogant and would relish being filmed.

Final answer: Cole

Sleepover time! unfortunately, you can only invite one person, who would it be?

Layla from Dark Elements Series and Rhysand from A Court of Thrones and Roses Series

Seriously! I love Katy, but who would say no to a sleepover with Rhysand? Not this girl that’s for sure!

Final answer: Rhys

Bam! you’re pregnant, who is the father (or mother…)?

Suze from The Mediator Series and Roth the Dark Elements Series

Again no contest here, Roth! I have a long standing thing for this guy so 😍

Final answer: Roth

You’ve just written a super important text, who would read it and not reply?

Ivy from Wicked and Tink from Wicked

Tink! He’d be too busy ordering shit from Amazon to even bother looking at his phone!

Final answer: Tink

You’ve just woken up and it’s time for breakfast, your mum has suddenly been replaced, who has she been replaced by?

Daemon the Lux Series and Mare Burrow from Red Queen

Ok, so I wouldn’t want Daemon as a parent. So I’d have to go with Mare.

Final answer: Mare Burrow

Let’s Talk (#12) Book Covers!

I’m the first to admit that I do judge a book by its cover. I know it’s a rubbish thing to do but I just can’t help it. Covers are the first thing that draws my attention especially if I’m in a book store. So this week I present to you (in no particular order) some of my favorite book covers:

The thing that I love about these covers is that they are all gorgeous in their own unique way.  I’ve read all the books on this list apart from Forces of Nature which is sitting on my book shelf waiting patiently for me to get to it, and at least 70% of them made to my reading shelve simply because the cover captured my attention. Which is a definite sign that the cover did its job.

But my absolute favorite one at the moment is the cover for These Broken Stars. This is a book that I read a few years ago now, I love it because it really captures the feeling of the story is about.

Anyways that’s all from me this week, I really like to hear one some of your favorite covers are?

Forgetting You, Forgetting Me – Monica James

Synopsis

My name is Lucy Tucker, and my life…it was perfect.

I worked the dream job. I had the most incredible family and friends. My home, Whispering Willows, a ranch in Montana, was everything I could ever wish for. My adoring fiancé, Samuel Stone, loved me unconditionally.

I had everything a girl could ever want.

But one fateful event shattered my perfect life. It’s unimaginable how simple, ordinary words can change a person’s life forever. For me those words were, “There’s been an accident.”

I thought Sam was my forever, but that forever came to a close the day Saxon Stone, Sam’s identical twin brother, came back. Saxon returned to Montana to help save Sam, however, the moment he entered my life, he turned my world upside down. But through chaos I somehow found clarity—clarity of who I was meant to be.

As time progressed, as seasons changed, and as a fire began to burn, I soon realized that Saxon was there for another reason…he was there to help save me.

My Review

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I have to admit the thing that drew my attention to this book was the A) the twin thing and B) THE amnesia element. I have read a few books where it’s the main character that has suffered this and the story is about them trying to remember their life, but this one is nothing like that – and it was so good!

The story begins on Lucy’s wedding day, this is abruptly brought to a halt when she gets the message that Sam her fiancé has been in a car accident, from then on both their lives are forever changed.

I really liked Lucy, I felt connected with her for most of the book, there were some moments when she did annoy me a little bit with her behavior but I could understand where she was coming from so it kind of balanced itself out. The thing I liked about this story was that you get to see what the other person is going through when the person they love doesn’t remember them. I have to give props to her because she endures some hellish behavior from Sam, yet she doesn’t give up hope that he will get better.

Sam, in the beginning, Lucy makes Sam out to be the perfect guy, we are treated to snippets of their relationship throughout the year’s courtesy of the diaries Lucy has been keeping. Right away I felt that the way she was painting was too perfect. Nobodies life is perfect, and as the story develops you begin to see that Lucy has been viewing the world through rose colored lenses.

Sam’s memory loss is hard, he doesn’t remember anything about Lucy and in frustrated he verbally lashes out at her on multiple occasions. I understand that the head injuries he has suffered have altered him and his recovery journey is difficult but man it was really hard to like the guy when he was continually being an asshole.

Saxon – is Sam’s slightly older and bad boy esque twin brother. It’s no secret that he is the black sheep of the family.  There is a lot of mystery that surrounds him. His relationship with Sam and their long standing feud is one of the things that kept me hooked to this book. You don’t find out what has gone down between them until right at the end of the book.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed this book, it’s the first one I have read by Monica James and you can be sure I’ll be checking out her other books. I would recommend if you are a fan of contemporary romance with country vibes!

My Rating:  3/5 🌟🌟🌟purpleaddit1lp

Lets Talk (#11) DNFs

Today I shelved my 3rd DNF of the year! I’m impressed with myself that I have managed to keep my DNF list this low so far this year. I hate giving up on a book especially when I’ve paid for it.

Let’s have a look at the books that didn’t cut the mustard so to speak:

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

I did actually write a little review about this one. My main beef with this book was that I did not enjoy the writing style or the world building. It felt very stark and depressing, it was a real shame because the synopsis had held so much promise for me.

Hate F*@k: Part One by Ainsley Booth

In all honesty, I can’t remember exactly why I didn’t finish this one. I think it had something to do with the main characters 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bad Teacher bClarissa Wild

This is the one that stopped reading to day. My god, I don’t know where to start… honestly, it was all pretty awful. The characters were blah and pretty boring. Thomas was just gross, he made my skin crawl with all the rancid shit that was coming out of his mouth. I just found the whole thing crass and distasteful.

My main motivation for not finishing a book is, that I have a lot of books that I want to read, therefore if I’m not enjoying what I’m reading, then I’m not going to waste time by continuing with it. I usually try to get through at least 5/6 chapters before packing it in though just encase things pick up.

That’s me done.

Feel free to let me know about your DNFs in the comments.

Until Next Time 🤓

Review

I received an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

So I was really intrigued when I read the synopsis of this book I thought it looked like it would be a good read, however, I did end up being disappointed. This was largely due to Janey. Her emotional intelligence was for the most part non-existent. It wasn’t until the very end that she acknowledged that her parents had feelings and needs which I thought for someone who is 17 was a bit stunted.

Spoilers coming up!

1. What is your absolute favorite book and why? The book that you’ve loved since the first word. The book that you couldn’t live without. The book that you are so grateful to have been able to read.

ACOMAF-cover1

Without a doubt, this is A Court of Mist and Fury! I came across this series last year and it was one of those situations when there was loads of hype but I wasn’t really expecting much especially when I wasn’t particularly blown away by the first book. So I was completely blown away by it and it just gets better with each re-reading.

2.What is the book that you have read or re-read the most times?

whitehotkiss

White Hot Kiss – Jennifer. L. Armentrout ah I just can’t get enough of Roth! Damn that demon is fine! So yeah slightly obsessed with this whole series, but mostly with Roth. Also, the story is pretty unique, it was the first one that came across that features Gargoyles.

3. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what book would it be?

13644055

Opposition (Lux #5) – Jennifer L. Armentrout – I could read this book until the cows come home. I love the way this book finished up the series and as usual, Katy and Daemon were a joy to read.
